Development of NB-IoT for end-to-end Applications in Agriculture

Bologna, Italy: To mitigate farming risks linked to natural disaster and extreme weather creating a smarter and more profitable farming worldwide, Pessl Instruments and Huawei are developing new end-to-end solutions.

To connect remote weather stations, soil moistures sensors and many other devices with the Internet, Narrow-band Internet of Things (NB-IoT) solutions will be available from mid-2017 using a new 3GPP standard. NB-IoT uses an ultra-low, cost effective power chip, with a long range reach which can connect almost every corner of the world with the Internet reusing the commercial mobile network.

For timely application of plant protection products, when spreading fertilizers, seeding and ploughing, when harvesting and in many other activities, the farmers will get wide connectivity to their own fields. For the first time at EIMA, Huawei and Pessl Instruments will showcase this technology, the International Agricultural and Gardening Machinery Exhibition, which will be held in Bologna from November 9 to 13 (Hall 22 – Stand A25).

"NB-IoT has unique advantages in supporting IoT applications. Huawei will help telco carriers accelerate the commercial adoption of NB-IoT by providing real world use cases. Huawei is committed by creating a bigger connectivity market so that leading industry players like Pessl Instruments as well as consumers can benefit from new opportunities and services. The NB-IoT project and the success achieved so far fully demonstrate our commitment," said Jiang Wangcheng, Vice President of Huawei's Marketing and Solutions Department.

“Pessl’s web platform FieldClimate.com which provides IoT solutions for almost 12 years in more than 85 countries will be equipped with NB-IoT chips which will reduce hardware costs, ease connectivity in remote areas and reduce the size of the hardware in fields considerably. These advantages and Pessl´s holistic solution will be the key success factors. The technology supports many farm management solutions: weather stations with disease model for about 80 crops, measured data combined with hyper localized high precision weather forecast service, devices with soil moisture sensors and decision support systems (DSS) for irrigation management, automatic smart controllers for remote automation, on-site soil nutrient analysis solutions and electronic traps for insects monitoring to name a few. All these devices are interconnected and help farmers, advisers, input industry to take smarter decisions and use less pesticide, water, fertilizer and have a better crop with less input,” said Gottfried Pessl , CEO and Founder of Pessl Instrument.

Pessl's 32 years’ experience in precision farming solutions and HUAWEI technology background with its worldwide network within the mobile network industry are the key ingredients for the success. Both companies are convinced that only cross industry partnerships can bring viable solutions to solve these complex problems and allow fast industry uptake. The solutions include smart API's which seamlessly interconnect to farm machinery, make tractors and combines intelligent where to go next and make farm management software (Farm ERP) simpler to use.
