FuturaGene Makes World-First Regulatory Submission for Gene-Edited Eucalyptus
São Paulo — FuturaGene, the biotechnology subsidiary of Suzano, the world’s largest pulp supplier, has formally submitted the world’s first regulatory consultation for a gene-edited eucalyptus to Brazil’s National Biosafety Technical Commission (CTNBio).
The submission marks a milestone for forestry biotechnology — the first regulatory filing for a CRISPR-Cas9 edited tree designed to enhance pulp production efficiency and sustainability. The new eucalyptus variety produces wood that is easier to process industrially, requiring less chemical and energy input.
Developed through a New Breeding Technique (NBT), this single-gene edit mimics natural variations achievable through conventional breeding — without introducing DNA from other species. FuturaGene’s approach demonstrates how gene editing can complement traditional breeding for sustainable forestry.
Dr. Stanley Hirsch, CEO of FuturaGene, said:
“This is a milestone moment for tree farming and pulp production. At FuturaGene, our mission is to harness cutting-edge science responsibly to help address climate change and meet the growing demand for bio-based products while protecting nature. By embracing biotechnology tools like genetic modification and gene editing, we are creating better trees that will create a better industry.”
FuturaGene has previously secured 11 approvals for genetically modified eucalyptus from CTNBio — including traits for yield enhancement, herbicide tolerance, and insect resistance. The regulator will now assess whether this gene-edited variety qualifies as equivalent to conventional eucalyptus under Normative Resolution No. 16 (RN 16), potentially exempting it from GMO regulations.
About FuturaGene:
FuturaGene is a pioneer in tree genetics and sustainable forestry R&D with facilities in Brazil and Israel. Its work focuses on increasing productivity and resilience in eucalyptus to meet the rising global demand for wood, while conserving land and water resources.
In 2015, FuturaGene became the first company in the world to gain commercial approval for a yield-enhanced genetically modified eucalyptus variety.
